what is difference between crystal and oscillator ?

What is the difference between quartz timing crystal?

quartz timing crystal refer to a Passive crystal oscillator that wafer plated with electrodes, mounted in support, and an added lid.

quartz timing crystal refer to a kind of active crystal oscillator that combines crystals, an oscillation circuit, an amplification circuit, and a Gate circuit.

There is SMD and DIP packages for both of them. In addition, they both could be applied in Network communication, WiFi, Bluetooth, GPS, etc.

However, differences could be found between them.

SUPPLY VOLTAGE

It could not be found in quartz timing crystal while could be found in quartz timing crystal.

NUMBER OF PADS

Usually, we could find 2 pads on crystal resonators while 4pads on oscillators.

DIRECTIONAL

There is no directionality in the pin position of the quartz timing crystal during welding,

so there is no need to worry about reverse bonding, and the quartz timing crystal must find the right voltage input pin.

NATURE OF WORK

quartz timing crystal can start vibration without the help of external components,

while quartz timing crystal can ONLY start vibration with the help of external components.

EXTERNAL CAPACITANCE

The quartz timing crystal does not need external capacitance in the practical application of the circuit,

while the quartz timing crystal needs external capacitance in the general application of the circuit,

which is usually equivalent to two capacitor elements, one frequency input pin and one frequency output pin.

There are two functions: One is to fine tune the actual output frequency of the quartz timing crystal,

the other is to enhance the stability of frequency output.

FREQUENCY DEVIATION

Compared with the quartz timing crystal, the quartz timing crystal is more susceptible to frequency offset due to the stray capacitance in the circuit.
